How the Instrument Cleaning Brushes Work

Burr, channel, general and toothbrush style brush configurations help clean surfaces, lumens and crevices of surgical instruments during processing. A variety of brush styles available at manual cleaning provides the right tools for a successful process. Instrument Cleaning Brushes are designed for cleaning instruments your Sterile Processing Department (SPD) sees every day including:

  • Burr Style – Designed to clean the surfaces of burrs, rasps, files and saws
  • Channel Style – Used to clean instruments and devices with a lumen or a channel
  • General Style – For cleaning of larger surfaces of instruments such as retractors and instruments with box locks
  • Toothbrush Style – Designed to reach fine surfaces of devices such as the teeth of Weitlaner Retractors and the textured surfaces of forceps

Why Instrument Cleaning Brushes?

Regulating bodies provide specific guidelines around proper brush usage in the manual cleaning process:

"If reusable brushes are used, they should be decontaminated at least daily and when visibly soiled to ensure they are not a source of contamination"

  • Source: IAHCSMM Central Service Technical Manual, Eight Edition, page 137

"When decontaminating devices with lumens, personnel should soak and flush the lumen according to the manufacturer's written IFU ... brush the lumen with a brush that is the correct size (diameter and length) and bristle type and material for the lumen, then rinse it."

  • ANSI/AAMI ST79; 2017, section 7.6.2

Instrument Cleaning Brushes offer a range of bristle materials and configurations ensuring that you have the correct brushes to clean your instrument inventory.
