Product Overview

STERIS offers cleanroom technologies to build healthy operating room (OR) environments. Cleanrooms – widely used in certain manufacturing and research environments – are designed to help neutralize contamination. Utilizing the same type of cleanroom technology and best practices, the Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels are a highly durable, non-porous system that requires minimal maintenance and makes cleaning easier.

How Do Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels Work?

Plascore Honeycomb Panels offer a high-strength, lightweight ceiling system ideal for operating room environments. These panels provide superior mechanical performance and are an excellent alternative to traditional materials like drywall. They feature a non-porous surface of uPVC to assist with cleaning and are a prefabricated, modular system that can be installed quickly. These honeycomb ceiling panels can also be integrated with STERIS OR equipment like lights, booms, and more.

According to the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) guidelines, operating rooms must have a “monolithic ceiling,” meaning a seamless, single-unit ceiling construction to prevent contaminants like dust from falling onto the surgical field. A monolithic ceiling is a mandatory requirement in an operating room. These ceiling panels should have no seams or crevices and a scrubbable surface that can be cleaned with disinfectants.

Why Choose the Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels?

These lightweight, monolithic ceiling panels offer numerous benefits to operating rooms, including:

  • Enhanced Hygiene: The uPVC ceiling panels' non-porous surface is easy to clean and disinfect, helping to maintain a sterile environment
  • Durability: High resistance to impact and corrosion ensures long-lasting performance, reducing the need for frequent replacements
  • Noise Reduction: Sound-absorbing ceiling panels incorporate specific materials to create a quieter environment conducive to patient care and surgical precision
  • Quick Installation: Modular honeycomb ceiling panel design allows for rapid installation with minimal disruption to hospital operations
  • Customizable Integration: Panels can be tailored to include necessary utilities such as lighting, medical gas lines, and other essential equipment, enhancing the functionality of the OR

FAQs

  • What is the difference between traditional OR ceiling panels and Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels?

Traditional drywall is cut to fit on-site. Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels are cut to size at the factory for quicker installation. Panels can also be field-modified as required.

  • What is the difference between CLEANSUITE® Operating Room Ceiling System and Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels?

CLEANSUITE is a prefabricated laminar flow ceiling system that provides a higher level of quality control than on-site construction, as defined in the FGI guidelines. CLEANSUITE includes air delivery plenum, ductwork, lighting, equipment mounts for surgical lights, booms, C-arms, monitor carriers, etc. Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels fill the ceiling gap between CLEANSUITE and the walls within the OR space.

Use of a modular or prefabricated laminar (or controlled) flow ceiling system shall be permitted in operating rooms and Class 3 imaging rooms/hybrid operating rooms in place of monolithic ceiling construction where the following conditions are met:

A2.1-7.2.3.3 (3)(b) Modular laminar flow ceiling systems. These complex assemblies are built in a factory setting, providing higher quality control than on-site construction. Systems and equipment such as ductwork and other air delivery systems, sprinklers, lighting, boom mounts, and ceilings are engineered and fabricated off-site, minimizing late changes (and related design inadequacies) due to field conditions and miscoordination. Benefits include concurrent construction, less risk, less waste, faster installation, control of quality, and a support structure that is integral to the design of the assembly.

  • How do Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels support infection prevention?

Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels feature a white, room-side, Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride (uPVC) finish that can be easily cleaned with traditional healthcare detergents and disinfectants without damaging the materials. The panels are installed without the dust and sanding debris associated with traditional gypsum board (drywall) ceilings.

  • Are Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels only compatible with STERIS equipment?

No. Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels can be installed anywhere in a facility, with or without STERIS or any other manufacturer’s equipment.

  • What are the benefits of a honeycomb ceiling panel structure?

Plascore Honeycomb Ceiling Panels feature an aluminum core with galvanized steel above the ceiling and white uPVC facing the room-side. The high-strength panels deliver a walkable ceiling surface.
