STERIS Health, Safety & Environmental Excellence

World Class Safety Excellence is the strategy behind all Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) initiatives. At STERIS, Safety Excellence is interwoven in all our activities via employees working together to reduce or eliminate incidents.

With a solid base of management commitment and employee involvement, STERIS is well-positioned to encourage employee ownership of our strong safety culture. To accomplish this task for locations within the United States, STERIS has chosen the Occupational Safety & Health Administration’s Star Level via the Voluntary Protection Program. The OSHA VPP Star is bestowed only upon companies with effective safety and health programs, workplace injury and illness rates lower than the industry average, and managers and employees who work as a functional team to prevent incidents and eliminate hazards. Achieving VPP Star status demonstrates to employees and the community that we are a leader in safety and health.

The following fourteen (14) STERIS facilities have achieved acceptance by OSHA into the Voluntary Protection Program at the Star level, the highest level possible:

STERIS continues to collaborate with its domestic and international operations to encourage and support those locations in working toward and meeting the criteria required for the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) or the STERIS STAR performance-based safety and health management system. Additionally, STERIS partners with its business units and service teams to implement and maintain HSE management systems that are aligned with, and equivalent to, the ISO 14001 and/or ISO 45001 voluntary standards.

The ISO 14001 and 45001 standards set out the requirements for HSE management good practices for any size of organization. They provide guidance in developing a robust HSE framework, bringing all relevant controls and processes into an appropriate management system. Both standards set out the criteria for organizations to establish an effective HSE management system. Designed for any type of organization, regardless of its activity or sector, they provide assurance that HSE impacts and aspects are identified, measured, controlled, and improved in a holistic manner.
