STERIS realizes the importance of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) to the well-being of our Customers, employees, community, the environment, and ultimately our shareholders. To that end, the company’s HSE teams and management are committed to supporting the HSE programs with ongoing involvement through our continuous improvement process.   

STERIS embarked on its Safety Excellence initiative nearly two decades ago. We have the goal of becoming an incident-free company. The cornerstone of this initiative is the belief that incidents result from unsafe acts or conditions, both of which are preventable.

Our goal is to promote a workplace fostered by caring employees who demonstrate an active, willing, and personal desire to achieve a Goal of Zero injuries, illnesses, spills, and non-conformances to compliance requirements. To achieve this, STERIS has embraced the following operating principles:

• Promote a work environment based on employee involvement, safety education, training, and leadership.
• Reinforce the need for employees to actively care about the health and safety of themselves and their co-workers.
• Embrace the philosophy that safety is core to the business.
• HSE improvements and effective preventative maintenance programs reduce hazards and risks.
• Recognition of site, service zone, and individual achievements.

STERIS applies the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration recordkeeping practices worldwide. Key metrics for benchmarking performance include Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) and Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR) injury and illness incident rates. STERIS strives to achieve TRIR and LTIR annual performance that is within the first quartile of Bureau of Labor Statistics benchmarks.
