Acrobat STERIS and Its Communities

STERIS is expanding its sustainability in “Green” initiatives. STERIS Corporation has facilities throughout the globe, and our manufacturing and product development and research sites are striving to comply with “Green” requirements. In product development we are constantly striving for energy savings, heat reduction, water reduction, safe materials, safe manufacturing processes, waste reduction, appropriate and safe chemical use, and the promotion of sustainable designs of healthcare facilities.

Programs are underway with USGBC (U. S. Green Building Council), LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), U.S. EPA, GGHC (Green Guide to Healthcare Construction), AIA- Academy for Healthcare Architecture, CHER (Coalition for Healthcare Environmental Research), the Center for Health Design’s Pebble Project Research Program, SSF (Seattle Science Foundation), CIMIT (Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology), and substantial research is being conducted at many institutions globally.

The following information highlights our ongoing commitment through sustainability initiatives:

Green Seal Certification ( received for:

Sustainability/Green Affiliations/Memberships

  • Clean Fuels Ohio (State of Ohio program)
  • Climate Leaders (Environmental Protection Agency program)

Environmental Footprint reduction efforts

  • SmartWay Transport Partner (Environmental Protection Agency program)
  • Greenhouse Gas Inventory for analysis and GHG emission reduction goal setting

Energy Savings

  • During 2015 and 2016, Research & Development Facilities were renovated with Energy Savings Improvements:
    • LED Lighting
    • High Efficiency HVAC Units
    • High Efficiency Restroom Fixtures
  • During 2013 and 2014, Mentor Campus parking lot fixtures were replaced with LED fixtures for a 40% savings.
  • During 2011, new Customer Solutions Center building was completed and built to LEED specifications.
  • During 2009, motion sensitive light switches were installed in all corporate office buildings; offices/meeting rooms/restrooms, resulting in a 10% reduction in total electrical load.
  • During January 2010, Installation of energy efficient lighting occurred at our Mentor, Ohio Distribution Center, resulting in a 50% reduction in total electrical load. Visibility is greatly improved in the warehouse due to relocation of the lights.
  • Montgomery Operations - installation of energy efficient lighting completed March 31, 2010. The facility is experiencing a minimum of a 25% reduction in lighting electrical load.
  • Replacement of Corporate Campus parking lot metal halide fixtures with LED fixtures generating a 40% savings.

Here are examples of sustainable commitment found in our product offerings:

Surgical Lights
Our HarmonyAIR™ M Series and G Series Surgical Lighting Systems use less than 25% of the energy of the previous generation of incandescent surgical lights. Lower power consumption not only reduces the energy requirements for operating the lights, but also reduces the energy required to cool the operating rooms in which these products are used. The LED modules in these new products last 50,000 to 60,000 hours, instead of just 1000 hrs, which greatly reduces the amount of waste due to bulb replacement. STERIS currently uses recyclable packaging material both for products they sell directly to Customers and for components that they buy from their suppliers. As one example, the protective foam packaging used to transport delicate LED assemblies from the supplier to the STERIS manufacturing facility are sent back to the supplier to be re-used multiple times.

STERIS Surgical Tables: AMSCO® 3085 SP, STERIS® 4085, STERIS® 5085, STERIS® 5085 SRT
STERIS Surgical Tables optional base covers are constructed of highly recyclable thermoform polymer with proven durability and cleaning compatibility. The surgical tables and accessories do not contain latex, mercury, PVC or DEHP.  Our aggressive trade-in program assures responsible scrapping or remanufacturing/refurbishing processes and keeps additional solid waste out of landfills.

Harmony Integration
Here we use servers, monitors and electronics that all meet ENERGY STAR requirements. As we make our own surgical grade monitors from the board level up, we are committed to ongoing improvements in terms of energy use, emissions and heat production.

Vision® 1321/1327 Series Cart and Utensil Washer/Disinfector
AMSCO washers are built to run efficiently and minimize their impact on the environment. Fast, effective cycles using concentrated & biodegradable chemistries result in less water and energy consumption, and a lower total cost of ownership. One of our latest innovations is the Vision® 1321/1327 Series Cart and Utensil Washer/Disinfector

  • Lowest water consumption per fill of any washer on the market
  • Recycles 70% of water during each cycle (excludes instrument cycle)
  • 10-minute cycles reduce utility consumption compared to previous models
  • Utilizes Ultra Concentrates to use less chemistry per cycle compared to non-concentrated formulations

Prolystica Ultra Concentrate Cleaning Chemistries
Introduced in 2006, these 10x concentrated cleaning chemistries provide industry leading cleaning and protection for surgical instruments while also being environmentally friendly. These Ultra Concentrated chemistries combine ergonomic packaging for staff safety with a biodegradable formula resulting in reduced shipment fuel costs, plastic packaging consumption and chemistry injected per wash cycle.

AMSCO® Evolution® Steam Sterilizer
Our Steri-Green Water Re-Circulating system allows you to save cost, water, and floor space. Designed for use within the AMSCO® Evolution® Steam Sterilizer, the system pays for itself in as little as 2.6 years.

  • Lowers utility costs by saving up to 99%* of the water used in the sterilization process
  • Supports LEED certification for your facility
  • Recycled water never comes in contact with processed sterile goods
  • Fits within the frame of the AMSCO Evolution Steam Sterilizer
  • Requires no additional installation cost

*Compared to processing a 500-lb. load in a standard AMSCO Evolution Evolution Steam Sterilizer

The STERI-Green Plus® Chilled Water Re-Circulating System uses only 1 gallon of water per cycle and connects to the facility's chilled water system in a closed loop to provide maximum efficiency in cooling recovered water

As previously mentioned, sustainability is beyond simply offering safe, environmentally friendly products. STERIS has also been a primary contributor to the following organizations that have spent considerable research on sustainability:

  • AIA-AH- STERIS is a major contributor to support research into many areas of healthcare, including sustainable healthcare facilities.
  • Our affiliation with two U. S. healthcare architecture graduate programs, Texas A & M and Clemson University, is yet another example of our commitment to promote sustainable design.
  • STERIS Corporation is a founding member of CHER (Coalition for Healthcare Environment Research).  This organization has no other STERIS competitor and is dedicated to sustainable and optimal healthcare facilities.
  • STERIS has been involved in the development of the GGHC (Green Guide for Health Care) guidelines since its inception.
  • STERIS is currently working to obtain ENERGY STAR ratings on our products.
  • We support LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) and the Center for Health Design’s Pebble Project Research Program certification.
  • Finally, per the well known study "HealthCast 2020: Creating a Sustainable Future" supported by PricewaterhouseCoopers' Health Research Institute, we adhere to their seven features of sustainable healthcare systems.
