STERIS is expanding its sustainability in “Green” initiatives. STERIS Corporation has facilities throughout the globe, and our manufacturing and product development and research sites are striving to comply with “Green” requirements. In product development we are constantly striving for energy savings, heat reduction, water reduction, safe materials, safe manufacturing processes, waste reduction, appropriate and safe chemical use, and the promotion of sustainable designs of healthcare facilities.
Programs are underway with USGBC (U. S. Green Building Council), LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), U.S. EPA, GGHC (Green Guide to Healthcare Construction), AIA- Academy for Healthcare Architecture, CHER (Coalition for Healthcare Environmental Research), the Center for Health Design’s Pebble Project Research Program, SSF (Seattle Science Foundation), CIMIT (Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology), and substantial research is being conducted at many institutions globally.

Our HarmonyAIR™ M Series and G Series Surgical Lighting Systems use less than 25% of the energy of the previous generation of incandescent surgical lights. Lower power consumption not only reduces the energy requirements for operating the lights, but also reduces the energy required to cool the operating rooms in which these products are used. The LED modules in these new products last 50,000 to 60,000 hours, instead of just 1000 hrs, which greatly reduces the amount of waste due to bulb replacement. STERIS currently uses recyclable packaging material both for products they sell directly to Customers and for components that they buy from their suppliers. As one example, the protective foam packaging used to transport delicate LED assemblies from the supplier to the STERIS manufacturing facility are sent back to the supplier to be re-used multiple times.

STERIS Surgical Tables optional base covers are constructed of highly recyclable thermoform polymer with proven durability and cleaning compatibility. The surgical tables and accessories do not contain latex, mercury, PVC or DEHP. Our aggressive trade-in program assures responsible scrapping or remanufacturing/refurbishing processes and keeps additional solid waste out of landfills.
Here we use servers, monitors and electronics that all meet ENERGY STAR requirements. As we make our own surgical grade monitors from the board level up, we are committed to ongoing improvements in terms of energy use, emissions and heat production.

Introduced in 2006, these 10x concentrated cleaning chemistries provide industry leading cleaning and protection for surgical instruments while also being environmentally friendly. These Ultra Concentrated chemistries combine ergonomic packaging for staff safety with a biodegradable formula resulting in reduced shipment fuel costs, plastic packaging consumption and chemistry injected per wash cycle.
